Constructions are given in Belden catalogue shorthand: Pr = pair, C = conductor, Str = stranded, Sol = solid, TC = tinned copper, BC = bare copper, OS = overall shield, IS = individual shield, Brd = braid, Ins = insulation, Jkt = jacket.
What a HART cable has to do
HART adds a digital signal on top of the 4–20 mA analogue loop, so configuration and diagnostic data travel over the same pair as the measurement. The cable therefore has to carry the analogue current and keep the digital signal clean.
Why shielded twisted pair?
Twisting and shielding keep electrical noise away from the signal on long runs through a plant. Belden lists individually shielded pairs with foil and braid for this.
How many pairs?
One pair serves one loop. Multi-pair cable carries several loops in one run to a junction box or cabinet.
Which jacket?
PVC for general indoor use, LSZH where low smoke and no halogen is required, direct burial types for laying in the ground, and armoured types where the cable runs without conduit.

Frequently asked questions
Which Belden cable is used for HART?
Belden lists its shielded twisted-pair data cables for HART, mainly the 9841 family in 24 AWG and the 3105A family in 22 AWG, with LSZH, direct burial and armoured versions.
Can I keep the existing 4–20 mA cabling for HART?
HART was designed to run on 4–20 mA loops. Whether an existing cable is suitable depends on its length, capacitance and shielding; send us the cable type and the loop length and we will compare it with the Belden datasheets.
Is there a halogen-free HART cable?
Yes. The T and Z versions of the 3105 to 3109 series and 9841ZH have LSZH jackets.
Do I have to buy a full reel?
No. We supply cut lengths. The part number and the total length are enough.
