Ethernet (LAN) installation cables

Ethernet cables by category

Pick the category. Each page lists all installation cables of the four brands in that category, with shield type and jacket.

Category Frequency Speed (100 m) Brands
Cat5e 100 MHz 1 Gbit/s Belden, Datwyler, Telegärtner, BLANKOM
Cat6 250 MHz 1 Gbit/s Belden, Datwyler, Telegärtner, BLANKOM
Cat6A 500 MHz 10 Gbit/s Belden, Datwyler, Telegärtner, BLANKOM
Cat7 600 MHz 10 Gbit/s Belden, Datwyler, Telegärtner
Cat7A 1000 MHz 10 Gbit/s Belden, Datwyler, Telegärtner, BLANKOM
Cat8 2000 MHz 25 / 40 Gbit/s (about 30 m) Datwyler, Telegärtner, IRENIS

Frequency and speed are the limits of the category standards. For the values of a specific product the manufacturer’s datasheet applies.

Brands

Brand Range
Belden A wide range from Cat5e to Cat7A; European CPR-rated cables and American CMR/CMP types
Datwyler Installation and flexible data cables from Cat5e to Cat 8.2; a strong range in Cat7A and Cat8
Telegärtner AMJ and UMJ installation cables from Cat.5 to Cat.8.2, alongside the same brand’s connectivity
BLANKOM / IRENIS Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A and Cat7A installation cables; IRENIS Cat8 cable

How to choose an Ethernet cable

A cable is specified in this order: category first, then the jacket for the place of use, then the shield type, and finally colour and conductor size.

Category

Set by the speed you need and the lifetime of the installation. New projects use Cat6A for 10 Gbit/s, Cat7A for bandwidth reserve and Cat8 for short 25/40 Gbit/s links in the data centre.

Jacket and fire class

Indoors a halogen-free (LSZH) jacket and the CPR class of the specification (Eca, Dca, Cca, B2ca) are usually required. PE is used outdoors and PUR for moving applications.

Shield type

U/UTP is unshielded. F/UTP has an overall foil, U/FTP a foil on each pair, S/FTP a foil on each pair plus an overall braid. Shielded types are chosen in noisy environments and dense bundles.

Colour, conductor size and PoE

The colour usually follows the colour code of the installation. The conductor size (AWG 22 to 27) affects link length and flexibility. If PoE will be used, state it in your request; types with a larger conductor and a shield dissipate heat better.

Frequently asked questions

Are network cable, LAN cable and Ethernet cable the same thing?

Yes. All three mean the twisted-pair copper data cable used in computer networks. The products on these pages are bulk installation cables.

Which category should I choose for a new office?

Cat6A is the most common choice today for 10 Gbit/s. Where more bandwidth reserve is wanted, Cat7A is chosen.

Can I get different brands in one quotation?

Yes. Tell us what you need and we will offer Belden, Datwyler, Telegärtner and BLANKOM options in the same quotation.

Do I have to buy a full reel?

No. We supply cut lengths. The part number and the total length are enough.

Request a quote

  • If you know the code: the part number, total length and delivery country are enough.
  • If you do not: send your application, line length and environment; we recommend the type.
  • If you have a specification or BOQ: send it and we will return the matching part numbers.
