Belden CANopen Cable

CAN bus is the physical network, and CANopen is a protocol that runs on it. RS-485 is a different electrical standard. Both use a shielded twisted pair with 120 ohm characteristic impedance, which is why Belden lists the same cable family for both. The devices are not interchangeable: a CANopen node will not talk on an RS-485 line.

How long can the line be?

The possible length depends on the bit rate and on the number of nodes. Follow the limits given by the device manufacturer and terminate both ends of the line with 120 ohm.

Do I need an extra conductor?

Many CANopen devices use a reference conductor next to the data pair. 3106A has one pair and one extra conductor for this. Multi-pair types give you further conductors when the device wiring calls for them.

Which Belden cable is used for CANopen?

Belden lists the 3105A family for CAN bus and CANopen: 3105A (1 pair), 3106A (1 pair + 1 conductor), 3107A (2 pairs), 3108A (3 pairs) and 3109A (4 pairs), plus LSZH and armoured versions.

Can I use an RS-485 cable for CANopen?

The Belden 120 ohm cables on this page are listed by Belden for both. What matters is the 120 ohm impedance, the shielding and the number of conductors your devices need.

Is there a halogen-free CANopen cable?

Yes. The Z series has a cross-linked LSZH jacket and the T series a thermoplastic LSZH jacket. Belden lists both as marine rated (ABS and DNV).

Is there an armoured version?

Yes. 123107A has aluminium armour. The 77xxxxT types and 933105Z have bronze armour with a double jacket.

Do I have to buy a full reel?

No. We supply cut lengths. The part number and the total length are enough.
