Choosing a cable for EtherNet/IP
EtherNet/IP runs the CIP industrial protocol over standard Ethernet. It is the network used by Rockwell Automation controllers and by many drives, I/O systems and robots. The cable is an industrial Ethernet cable; what changes with the plant is the category, the shielding and the jacket.
Two pairs or four?
Two-pair cable carries 100 Mbit/s and suits device connections. Four-pair cable is needed for gigabit and is the usual choice between switches.
Shielded or unshielded?
Shielded types are chosen next to drives, motors and welding equipment. Unshielded types are common inside cabinets and in low-noise areas.
What does Bonded-Pair mean?
In Belden Bonded-Pair cables the two conductors of each pair are joined along their length, so the pair keeps its geometry when the cable is pulled or bent.

Frequently asked questions
Which Belden cable is used for EtherNet/IP?
Belden lists its DataTuff industrial Ethernet cables for EtherNet/IP. Common starting points are 7923A (Cat5e, unshielded) and 7921A (Cat5e, shielded).
Is EtherNet/IP cable different from industrial Ethernet cable?
No. EtherNet/IP uses standard Ethernet cabling. The codes on this page are the ones Belden lists under EtherNet/IP; the wider range is on our industrial Ethernet pages.
Is there a flexible cable for moving machine parts?
Yes. Belden lists high-flex types such as 7938A and the Cat6A types IEA004 and IEA005.
Do I have to buy a full reel?
No. We supply cut lengths. The part number and the total length are enough.
Request a quote
- If you know the code: the part number, total length and delivery country are enough.
- If you do not: send your application, line length and environment; we recommend the type.
- If you have a specification or BOQ: send it and we will return the matching part numbers.
