Quick selection: RS-232 cable by number of signals
The number of conductors follows from the signals your devices use.
| Belden code | Construction | Typical choice when | Quote |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9925 | 3 conductors, 24 AWG | Simple TX, RX and ground links | Request a quote |
| 9927 | 4 conductors, 24 AWG | One handshake line is added | Request a quote |
| 9934 | 9 conductors, 24 AWG | Fully wired 9-pin connections | Request a quote |
| 9937 | 25 conductors, 24 AWG | 25-pin connections | Request a quote |
Send us the connector type and the pin assignment if you would like us to confirm the conductor count.
All Belden RS-232 and RS-423 cable codes
The 12 codes Belden currently lists for RS-232 and RS-423. All have an overall foil and braid shield and a PVC jacket.
Choosing an RS-232 cable
RS-232 and RS-423 are single-ended serial interfaces: each signal uses one conductor against a common ground. That is why these cables are counted in conductors, not in pairs.
Why low capacitance?
The capacitance of the cable limits how far and how fast an RS-232 signal can travel. A low-capacitance cable allows a longer run at the same baud rate.
How many conductors?
Three are enough for transmit, receive and ground. Hardware handshaking adds conductors; full connector wiring needs as many conductors as there are pins in use.
RS-232, RS-422 or RS-485?
RS-232 is for short point-to-point links. For long distances or several devices on one line, RS-422 and RS-485 use differential pairs and a different cable.
Why Belden?
- Low-capacitance design for longer serial runs
- Overall foil and braid shield on every type
- From 3 to 37 conductors in one series
- Stranded conductors for easy handling
- A datasheet for each code on belden.com

Frequently asked questions
Which Belden cable is used for RS-232?
Belden lists the 9925 to 9938 series in 24 AWG, from 3 to 37 conductors, and 9791 with 6 conductors in 28 AWG.
Can I use RS-232 cable for RS-485?
It is not recommended. RS-485 needs twisted pairs with 120 ohm impedance; see our RS-485 page for those cables.
How long can an RS-232 cable be?
It depends on the baud rate and on the capacitance of the cable. Send us the baud rate and the distance and we will check it against the Belden datasheet.
Do I have to buy a full reel?
No. We supply cut lengths. The part number and the total length are enough.
Request a quote
- If you know the code: the part number, total length and delivery country are enough.
- If you do not: send your application, line length and environment; we recommend the type.
- If you have a specification or BOQ: send it and we will return the matching part numbers.
