Cat5e cable selection: place of use first, then shield type
Cat5e is still the most common cable for existing installations and budget-sensitive projects. It is specified up to 100 MHz and carries 1 Gbit/s over 100 metres.
Once the category is fixed, choose in this order: 1. the jacket for the place of use (halogen-free, PVC, outdoor, armoured), 2. the shield type (S/FTP, F/FTP, U/FTP, F/UTP, U/UTP), 3. the colour and, where needed, the conductor size (AWG 22 to 27). If PoE will be used, state it in your request. The tables below follow this order: each section is a place of use and the rows are sorted by shield type.

Frequently asked questions about Cat5e cable
Which speed does Cat5e support?
1 Gbit/s (1000BASE-T) up to 100 metres. For 10 Gbit/s you need Cat6A or higher.
Cat5e or Cat6 for a new project?
New installations usually start at Cat6, or Cat6A where 10 Gbit/s is planned. Cat5e makes sense for extending an existing plant and where 1 Gbit/s is enough.
Is there a Cat5e cable for outdoor use?
Yes. BLANKOM 1241D, for example, is made for outdoor and low-temperature use, and Belden offers PE-jacketed and burial types.
Which cable should I choose for PoE?
Cables warm up under PoE; a larger conductor (AWG 23 or 22) and a shielded construction dissipate the heat better. Tell us the PoE power and the number of cables in the bundle and we will suggest a suitable type.
Do I have to buy a full reel?
No. We supply cut lengths. The part number and the total length are enough.
