What is PoE and which power classes are there?
PoE (Power over Ethernet) carries the supply voltage together with the data over the same Ethernet cable, so that devices such as cameras, wireless access points, IP phones and set-top boxes work without a separate power cable.

As power rises, heating in cable bundles becomes important; cables with thicker conductors (23 or 22 AWG) and shielding, and connectors designed for PoE, are preferred.

What does PoE need?
- The right cable. Cat 6, Cat 6A and Cat 7 cables with thicker conductors heat up less.
- The right connector. RJ45 connectors designed for PoE that withstand unmating under load.
- A PoE device. Power and data on one cable; no mains socket needed.
- Power budget. The total PoE power of the switch has to cover the sum of the connected devices.

Frequently asked questions about PoE
What is the difference between PoE and PoE+?
PoE (IEEE 802.3af) provides 15.4 W per port at the source, PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at) 30 W. IEEE 802.3bt raises this to 60 W and 90 W.
Does PoE need special cable?
Standard cables of Cat 5e and higher carry PoE. At higher power and in thick bundles, cables of Cat 6A or higher with thicker conductors (23 or 22 AWG) are recommended to reduce heating.
Can the BLANKOM 6800+ set-top box be powered by PoE?
According to the manufacturer’s published information PoE is available on the 6800+ PoE model only.
