Which patch cord?
A patch cord is a short cable with factory-fitted RJ45 plugs at both ends: between panel and switch in the cabinet, between outlet and device at the user side. Category, shield type, jacket and cable shape decide the choice.

Cat8 patch cords
Cat.8.1 is the class specified up to 2000 MHz with the RJ45 interface and is used for short links inside data centre cabinets.

Cat7 patch cords (RJ45 on Cat.7 raw cable)
Because the RJ45 plug is not specified as a Cat.7 component, these are, properly named, RJ45 patch cords made from Cat.7 raw cable: the cable is in the 600 MHz class, the RJ45 interface sets the link performance.

Flat Ethernet cable
A flat Ethernet cable is a thin patch cord with the pairs laid side by side; it can be run under carpet and along skirting boards and door frames. IRENIS offers it in three categories: Cat6 flat cable CAT6-2000, Cat7 flat cable CAT7-3000 and Cat8 flat cable CAT8-3000. Flat cable is meant for short, visible connections rather than fixed installation; for long runs a round shielded cable is preferred.
Which brand for which job?

Frequently asked questions about RJ45 patch cords
What is the difference between a patch cord and installation cable?
Installation cable has solid conductors and is laid between panel and outlet in the fixed installation. A patch cord has stranded, flexible conductors and plugs at both ends, and is for short connections that are plugged and unplugged often.
Is a Cat7 patch cord really Cat7?
The cable is Cat.7, the plug is RJ45. Because the RJ45 interface is classified as Cat.6A and Cat.8.1, the link performs as Cat.6A. That is why this page uses the name “RJ45 patch cord on Cat.7 raw cable”.
Can an unshielded patch cord be used in a shielded installation?
It works, but shield continuity ends at the patch cord. In a shielded (S/FTP or F/UTP) installation the patch cord should be shielded as well.
Does a flat Ethernet cable reduce speed?
Over short distances it delivers the speed of its category. Its shielding and twist are weaker than in a round cable, so for long runs and noisy environments a round shielded cable is preferred.
What are the different colours for?
Colour is for telling lines apart in the cabinet: for example separate colours for data, voice, cameras and management. There is no electrical difference.
