Which instrument is right for you?
There are three distinct measurement jobs in fiber optics, and each one calls for a different instrument: measuring the loss of a link (light source + power meter), mapping the link and finding how many metres away the fault is (OTDR), and reading subscriber power on a live link (selective PON power meter). The table below goes from the job to the instrument.
| What you want to do | Instrument needed | PROMAX model |
|---|---|---|
| Measure the total loss of a link (dB) | Laser light source + optical power meter, or a ready-made kit | PROLITE-105 + PROLITE-63B, or the PL-575 / PL-675 kit |
| Loss on a multimode link (LAN, data centre) | 850/1300 nm multimode source + multi-wavelength meter | PROLITE-82 + PROLITE-63B |
| Find how many metres away the fault is | OTDR | PROLITE-44 or PROLITE-45 (short / medium links), PROLITE-51B (long backbone) |
| Test a live FTTH link without cutting service | 1625 nm OTDR + PON power meter | PROLITE-52 |
| Read xPON power at the subscriber end | Selective PON power meter | PROLITE-67 or PROLITE-57 |
| An OTDR for both singlemode and multimode | Four-wavelength OTDR | PROLITE-53B |
| See a break with your own eyes (short range) | Visual fault locator (VFL) | PROLITE-24; built into PROLITE-44 and PROLITE-45 |
| A simple power meter to carry in your pocket | Pocket-size power meter | PROLITE-17 |
| Power meter + VFL + Ethernet test in one unit | Three-function tester | PROLITE-24 Fiber Test UTP |
| Get past the OTDR dead zone in the first few metres | Launch cable | AF-016 / AF-017 / AF-018 |
| Certify in-building fiber single-handed | Professional measurement kit | PL-675 |
| You have a splicer but no measurement gear | Termination kit | PL-10B or OP-040B |
The guidance in this table is for typical use. If your link length, connector type and loss budget are defined, we will give you a recommendation tailored to them.
Laser light sources
The transmit side of a loss measurement. You put the source at one end of the link and the power meter at the other; the difference between the two readings is the loss of the link. FTTx links need the 1310/1490/1550 nm trio; LAN and data centre multimode links need 850/1300 nm.

PROLITE-105
Three-wavelength laser source
A triple laser source that covers everything an FTTx network needs: 1310, 1490 and 1550 nm. Our most widely used model in the field. Pair it with a PROLITE-63B or a PROLITE-67 and you measure the loss of the link end to end.

PROLITE-105 US
Three-wavelength laser source (North America)
The same housing with a different set of wavelengths: 1310, 1550 and 1610 nm. For the wavelengths used in North American FTTH plans. If you have export projects, or you are working on a network built to that plan, ask for this model rather than the standard PROLITE-105.

PROLITE-55
Economical triple laser source
1310, 1490, 1550 nm — high stability at a more accessible price. It talks to the PROLITE-63B power meter over a digital protocol: the meter identifies the wavelength by itself, so you do not have to set both ends separately.

PROLITE-82
Dual-wavelength multimode laser source
850 nm or 1300 nm for multimode fiber. Continuous (CW) or modulated output — 270 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz. Used on in-building LANs and data centre backbones. Singlemode sources do not give correct readings on multimode fiber; if you have a multimode link, a dedicated source is essential.
Optical power meters
The receive side of a loss measurement; on a live link it reads subscriber power directly. There are two families: broadband meters, which measure one selected wavelength, and selective meters, which separate the 1310/1490/1550 nm carried on the same fiber and read each one individually — indispensable on xPON.

PROLITE-63B
Economical optical power meter
Six calibrated wavelengths (850–1625 nm). It communicates digitally with the PROLITE-55 light source and recognises the wavelength automatically. The standard instrument for day-to-day loss measurement.

PROLITE-67
Selective power meter for FTTx-xPON
A selective instrument that measures three wavelengths (1310, 1490, 1550 nm) individually. Together with PROMAX laser sources it certifies the link.

PROLITE-57
Economical selective optical meter
Calibrated at all three of 1310, 1490 and 1550 nm. Alongside the normal measurement mode it offers a PASS/FAIL mode — the field crew decides at a glance against the threshold value. For xPON-based FTTx.

PROLITE-17
Pocket-size optical meter
Pocket-sized, with six calibrated wavelengths (850–1625 nm). The basic meter that belongs in every technician’s bag.

PROLITE-24 Fiber Test UTP
Power meter + VFL + Ethernet test
Three instruments in one compact unit: a seven-wavelength calibrated optical power meter, a visual fault locator (VFL) and an Ethernet tester. A single-bag solution for crews that work on the fiber and the copper side alike.
OTDRs — optical time domain reflectometers
An OTDR maps the link: it measures from one end only and reports the loss of every splice and every connector, how many metres away a break is, and the total length of the link. One figure drives the choice — dynamic range (dB): the higher it is, the longer the link the instrument can see. For short in-building links 20–24 dB is enough; on an intercity backbone you need more than 40 dB.

PROLITE-45
Multifunction OTDR
1310/1550 nm · 24/22 dB. A 5-inch touchscreen and a multitasking interface: it works as an OTDR, an optical power meter and a VFL at the same time. Distance range up to 100 km, 1.5 m event dead zone, 8 hours of uninterrupted operation, USB charging. More than 200,000 measurement records on the 8 GB card.

PROLITE-44
Multifunction mini OTDR
1310/1550 nm · 22/20 dB. Small enough for a pocket, with a 4-inch touchscreen and an interface you operate like a phone. Link mapping (Link Image) and VFL are built in, and there is a torch for working in the dark. 6 hours of operation, one-handed use.

PROLITE-50B
Singlemode micro OTDR
1310/1550 nm · 28/20 dB. A 3.5-inch TFT display, a selectable distance range up to 240 km and a 2.5 m event dead zone. It transfers traces to a computer; the bundled software produces and prints the report. From fiber manufacturing through to network maintenance.

PROLITE-52
Micro OTDR with PON power meter
1625 nm · 37 dB — live fiber testing. It measures without interrupting the link while subscriber traffic is flowing, and it also carries a PON power meter calibrated at 1310, 1490 and 1550 nm. 0.8 m event dead zone. The instrument for crews troubleshooting an in-service FTTH network.

PROLITE-51B
Singlemode OTDR with a large touchscreen
1310/1550/1625 nm · 43/42/42 dB. The highest dynamic range on this page — for long backbone links and intercity networks. Built-in VFL, automatic and manual test modes, and an ergonomic housing with a handle.

PROLITE-53B
Four-wavelength singlemode + multimode OTDR
850/1300/1310/1550 nm · 23/28/38/36 dB. Multimode and singlemode in a single instrument — on data centre and campus networks it saves you carrying two separate OTDRs. Built-in optical power meter and remote control over Ethernet.

OTDR launch cables
The first few metres of an OTDR trace are a dead zone: the loss of the connector nearest the instrument is not measured. Insert a launch cable and that dead zone falls inside the cable instead, so you can measure the first connector of the link as well. It belongs in the bag of every crew that does certification work.

AF-016 / AF-017 / AF-018
OTDR launch cables
Three lengths and two fiber types:
- AF-016 — 150 m, singlemode
- AF-017 — 150 m, multimode
- AF-018 — 1,000 m, singlemode
SC/SC connectors, a mating life of more than 1,000 cycles and attenuation as low as 0.9 dB per kilometre. Supplied in a compact magnetic case — it sticks to a rack or any metal surface and leaves your hands free in the field.
Fiber optic measurement kits
Buying a ready-made kit instead of picking the instruments one by one does two things: nothing ends up missing, and the total cost comes down. PROMAX kits are built around what an FTTH installer actually needs in the field — source, meter, termination tools and cleaning supplies in the same case.

PL-10B
Fiber optic termination kit
For crews that have a splicer but no accessories. Cleaver, stripper, visual fault locator and cleaning supplies together. If you bought your splicer elsewhere, or you are putting a second crew together, this is the fastest way to complete the set.

OP-040B
Fusion kit add-on
An expansion pack for those who already own a PROMAX fusion kit (splicer + cleaver + stripper). It brings your existing kit up to taking full measurements. If you would rather complete what you have than buy a whole new kit, this is the most economical route.

PL-575
Economical fiber optic measurement kit
A cost-effective measurement kit. It lets you take the basic measurements needed to certify an optical distribution installation — for firms setting up a new crew or buying a second set.

PL-675
Professional fiber optic measurement kit
Laser light source + selective optical power meter together. It lets a single operator certify the fiber network in a building from end to end — no need for two people holding the two ends.
What does each measurement tell you?
This is the question we are asked most often when quoting. Here are the four, briefly distinguished.
Loss (attenuation) measurement
Light source + power meter
Light of a known power is launched into one end of the link and measured at the other; the difference between the two readings is the total loss of the link (dB). This measurement is what decides whether a link can be handed over — if it stays under the loss budget, the link passes. It is the basis of every certification report.
OTDR measurement
A map of the link
Taken from one end only. It shows the loss of every splice, every connector and every bend together with its distance. A loss measurement answers “did the link pass?”; an OTDR answers “where is the loss?”. It is the instrument for fault finding and for acceptance testing.
Selective PON measurement
Live subscriber power
In FTTH three wavelengths are carried together on the same fiber: downstream data (1490), upstream data (1310) and TV (1550). An ordinary power meter sums all three and gives a wrong reading. A selective meter separates them and reads each one — this is the measurement you need for a correct diagnosis when a subscriber complains.
Visual fault location (VFL)
Red laser
A visible red laser is launched into the fiber. A break, an excessive bend or a poor splice gives itself away by glowing through the jacket. It is the fastest way to find a fiber patched into the wrong port inside a patch panel, and it works up to a few hundred metres.
